Artist Statement
My work is often identified as being conceptual and that category would not be entirely inaccurate but beyond just thoughts, ideas and concepts, I am specifically driven by the ways that reality can be perceived physically, emotionally and intellectually. Pared with the quest for reality perception is my fascination with the specific differences between “exclusivity” and “availability” and in the case of this exhibition, there will be some works that will only be seen or available for sale at a specific time or may only be seen and purchased on the internet (see EBay link below).
In this current exhibition, Quick Response (Within Reason) and No Regrets, this quest for reality perception and exclusivity/availability dilemma is manifest in a number of different ways. For example, there will be large digital prints of QR codes (Quick Response codes which are similar to UPC codes but can store much more information) which can be read either as interesting black & white geometric abstract images or can be deciphered by a smartphone (enabled with the proper software).
Other digital prints in this show will include color blind tests where only those who can “see” all colors will be able to detect imagery imbedded with the picture and others where probably no one will be able to accurately access the information in the image.
The exhibition will include works in many media including neon signage, photographs of my FaceBook “friends” (grouped randomly by the coincidental time they chose to be online) as well as photographs of a vinyl LP record (Lessons in Ventriloquism).
Despite this formal and serious description, this exhibition is in keeping with a very one important feature for my artwork and life – humor. I value irony and humor as a vehicle for inclusion and accessibility.
